Our newly installed Hybrid Solar System supplies the whole island. We no longer burn 150 litres of diesel every day as with 232 large solar panels and 18 lithium batteries our hybrid system uses solar during the day and batteries in the night. The batteries are charged by solar during the day. To ensure we always have power we keep a standby generator on hand although this is rarely used.
Along with these efficiencies, we have also replaced our gas hot water cylinders with electric cylinders so they are also powered by renewable energy – another carbon footprint reduction – and plenty of warm water for showers.
Our goal was to reduce our carbon footprint by approximately 75% however to date we are seeing close to a 95% reduction. In less than 3 weeks we have saved over 10 tonnes of carbon emissions. This will equate to an approximate carbon footprint saving of 185 tonnes per year.
Much of our water is caught and stored from the roofs of the buildings. To top up this supply we also pump water from the ocean which is purified through our reverse osmosis desalination plant. All water is then filtered and treated through our state of the art ultra-violet filtration plant to bring you fresh clean drinking water from the tap.
All waste water is treated on the island in our waste water treatment plant. Treated recycled water from the waste water treatment plant flushes some toilets and so we keep our water usage to a minimum. This reduces the amount of water we are required to make through the reverse osmosis plant by approximately 25% saving a substantial amount of energy.
All Fiji Bitter and Fiji Gold beer bottles are returned to the supplier for reuse. Other bottles that cannot be reused are broken down through our bottle crushing machine.
There is a dedicated marine reserve surrounding the island which has resulted in a vast increase in the fish population around our shores and beyond
